A. Apply oxygen at a dose that maintains a pulse ox reading of more than 94%.
If the respiratory rate and tidal volume are both adequate, consider supplemental oxygen. According to the current AHA guidelines, administer supplemental oxygen if the patient is dyspneic, hypoxemic, has obvious sins of heart failure, or has an SpO2 reading of less than 94% or is unknown. Administer oxygen via nasal cannula at 2 to 4 lpm, and titrage the concentration of litre flow to achieve and maintain an SpO2 reading of more than 94%. The AHA 2010 guidelines indicate that there is not sufficient evidence to support the routine use of supplemental oxygen in patient who do not present with dyspnea, hypoxemia, heart failure or an SpO 2 reading of less than 94%. Do not over-oxygenate the patient.
