How can virtual reality be used to control phantom pain experienced by an amputee?

What will be an ideal response?

Virtual reality is being used experimentally to help people with amputations control phantom pain. The system gives the illusion that the amputated limb is still there. Using a headset, the patient sees himself or herself with two arms or legs. They are able to use the physical limb to control the virtual limb. Five patients have tried the system.
