Even from its introduction, this story works to undermine the trustworthiness and spirituality of the Church and its monks, claiming that the monks of the story are holier than those of its day. Through the story, we find that the monk and abbot not only fail to uphold their vows, but they engage in every manner of deceit to conceal their untoward actions and to make it possible to continue those actions in secret.
