Social support has been found to protect individuals from the negative effects of stress. However, there are many different forms of support. Emotional concern is showing empathy for the problems of others. It involves listening to others' problems and showing sympathy and understanding. Instrumental aid describes food, shelter, clothing, and medicine. In other words, material support that enables individuals to satisfy their basic needs and cope with their situations. Information is providing information and advice that enhances a person's ability to cope. Appraisal involves getting feedback from others as to how a person is doing. This kind of support helps a person understand what has happened to them. Finally, socializing, that is, talking with others, doing activities and going out, all help individuals cope with stress. People who have means of social support are less prone to illnesses when confronted with stress. Research has found that social support has helped people cope with acculturation, natural disasters, and physical illnesses such as cancer.
