Discuss the significance of the Iliad and Odyssey for Greek culture and identity.

What will be an ideal response?

The Iliad and Odyssey play a fundamental role in establishing a Greek cultural identity. They present examples of areté (virtue or excellence) to be emulated. They show the extremes of human nature—brutality and compassion—and demonstrate that one is responsible for one’s actions. They are the accumulated wisdom of earlier ages collected by Homer. They form the basis of Greek education.
