Why would some states adopt a graduated license program where young people have restrictions

regarding driving over a period of months or years?

What will be an ideal response?

The adolescents immature prefrontal cortex makes it difficult for them to make logical
decisions at times, particularly when faced with the social component of peer pressure. Alcohol is a
factor in nearly one quarter of fatalities with maleteen drivers and in about 12% when female teens
are driving. Having passengers in the car increases the likelihood of high-risk behaviors. A graduated
license allows teens to get used to driving while also allowing the prefrontal cortex to mature. The
laws usually include stiff punishments if the young person is caught violating driving laws, making it
less desirable to do so.
