Describe the four types of data used in statistics. What is an example of each type?
What will be an ideal response?
The four types of data used in statistics include Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, and Ratio.
• Nominal data uses numbers for categorical purposes only. An example would be for gender Male = 1 and Female = 2
• Ordinal data uses numbers to rank data. For example, teacher evaluations ask students to rank a professor's teaching effectiveness on a scale of 1 to 5
• Interval data measures the size of the difference between values. For example, in product testing, interval data can tell you the time in between each product's success or failure.
• Ratio data is similar to interval data except that the differences between the values are quantified and proportions can be specified. An example, again with product testing, could be that one product successfully passed 3 times as many tests as another.
