Explain what MDLs are and what they do for communicators.

What will be an ideal response?

A message design logic (MDL) is a person’s belief about communication that links thoughts to the construction of messages. Individuals using an expressive MDL will value direct communication. Those with a conventional MDL will hold stricter expectations for being appropriate. Responses should include that to be a competent communicator a person needs to consider not only whether they think being direct might be appropriate behavior but also what the culture would expect, what the situation/context demands, and what their conversational partner might prefer.
