The patellofemoral articulation is formed by the triangular-shaped dorsal patellar surfaces and the medial and lateral lips of the intercondylar groove of the femur. The dorsal aspect of the patella is divided into three articular regions: the largest is the steep lateral facet, followed in size by the shallower medial facet; the smallest of the surfaces is the odd facet, which lies medial to the medial facet and is not present in all individuals. The patella sits on the intercondylar groove of the femur, nestled between, but not necessarily in contact with, the larger and steeper lateral lip and the smaller medial facet. The patella is embedded in the knee joint capsule and is attached to the quadriceps by the quadriceps tendon superiorly and to the tibial tubercle by the patellar ligament inferiorly.
