A discretionary hyphen only appears when it is needed at the end of a line and then disappears if the text reflows, placing the discretionary hyphen in the middle of the column and making the hyphen unnecessary. Ctrl+click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) to open the Context menu, then
select Insert Special Character>Hyphens and Dashes>Discretionary Hyphen
