How are disagreements resolved?
After sufficiently diagnosing a disagreement, it is time to take specific actions to resolve it. Productive resolution requires effective communication, which involves separating the people from the problem. It also involves focusing on interests, not on positions that individuals have taken with respect to the issues.
An issue is the subject of discussion, but a position is the perspective a person takes on the issue. Positions tend to differ because relative interests, or the underlying reasons or needs of each party involved in the issue, also differ. To communicate effectively, individuals should begin by maintaining ownership of the problem by not placing explicit blame entirely on the other person. Next, individuals should encourage two-way discussion, seeking additional information when necessary. Ultimately, success depends on both parties going beyond trying to convince the other of the merits of their position on the issue, and instead trying to understand the underlying goals and interests of the other party. Interests often remain hidden to the other party, and when this happens, it is very hard to resolve the conflict.
