Discuss the significance of Ur.
What will be an ideal response?
Ur is one of the oldest cities of ancient Sumeria. It is also home to the oldest, best-preserved restored ziggurat. Topped by a sanctuary, a ziggurat is a pyramidal structure that stood out against the flat, fertile planes of Mesopotamia and might have symbolized a bridge between heaven and earth. The ziggurats were fundamental to Mesopotamian religion, as they were used by the priest-ruler class to mediate between the sky and the earth and secure bountiful harvests from the gods. Religion was central to the people of Ur, and a cemetery discovered by archaeologist C. Leonard Woolley contained many well-preserved artifacts, which tell us a great deal about the nature of their beliefs.
