Discuss the circumstances that led to the development of a national energy policy in the United States.

What will be an ideal response?

In 1973, the Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) implemented an embargo on oil supplies in reaction to U.S. support of Israel in the Yom Kippur War. The embargo produced hours-long waits in gas station lines and led the United States to set national energy policies, including the creation of a Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the introduction of fuel-efficiency standards for passenger cars and light trucks, and support for research and development of alternative energy sources.
