Examine the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (MyArtsLab) detailing its imagery and purpose
What will be an ideal response?
This complex demonstrates the Queen's architectural taste and political ambitions and was an important part of her campaign to be taken as a divine ruler in her own right rather than a daughter or wife of a ruler. Here she worshipped her patron gods and after her death her successors honored her memory (though she is not buried here). The temple consists of three terraces separated by two long ramps; the entire structure is symmetrical. The first level consisted of a large open plaza backed by a long colonnade. A long ramp led up to a second court that housed shrines to Anubis and Hathor. Another ramp led to another colonnade fronted with colossal royal statues, two more colonnades, a series of chapels, and behind them, cut into the cliff, a central shrine to Amun-Re.
