What are some of the ways that dentate status affects nutrition?
What will be an ideal response?
Declines in chewing ability result in a decrease in diet quality. Individuals who are edentulous or who had few dental functional units were more likely to make poor dietary choices, including eating less nutrient dense foods and more foods higher in fat and sugar. As the number of functional units declines, so does diet quality. Those with fewer opposing pairs of teeth tended to avoid stringy, crunchy, and dry solid food, which may result in a decrease in intake of fruits and vegetables. The use of dentures does not necessarily solve the problem, and in fact denture use has been associated with health risks such as high cholesterol, overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus. Finally, edentulous individuals and those with dentures may have difficulty forming a bolus that is safe to swallow, which contributes to an increased risk for aspiration or choking.
