What impact do you feel the Latina/Latino vote will have on national elections in the future? What factors might limit that impact in the near future? Explain your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
: Students should discuss the growing population rate of Latinos but should also discuss some of the limiting factors, such as the fact that this is a young population that does not vote at the same rate to which their potential rate might predict. Students should focus also on the fact that Hispanics identify themselves by nationality rather than as a whole group and do not vote as a unified group. Also, Hispanics vote in differing patterns on different issues. For instance, they are liberal when it comes to the subject of immigration and conservative on subjects like right-to-life issues and abortion.
