What are some major methodological issues that face adolescent sexuality researchers?
What will be an ideal response?
Sexuality researchers frequently complain that it is often very difficult to access and
recruit samples; thus, it is important to ensure that one's participants are representative
of adolescents in the community. To circumvent this issue, some sexuality researchers
use large, archival data sets of adolescent sexual behavior, or poll college students
regarding their attitudes and behavior. Most adolescent sexuality researchers assess
vaginal intercourse as the benchmark statistic; however, when collecting data on any
sexual behavior it is important to assess its occurrence, frequency, and choice of partner.
Because such data are viewed as highly personal, it is important to stress to the
participant the importance of the research and steps that will be taken to ensure
confidentiality or anonymity of the responses. Some researchers administer a social
desirability measure in such studies and drop participants prone to providing socially
desirable responses in general.
