The rise of computers and the Internet has led to an explosion in completely new words (e.g., website, selfie), but has also given new meanings to old words. Provide some examples of such words and explain how their meanings have changed over time.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary, but students should be easily able to think of words that have been brought about by technological expansion. For instance, the word “mouse” now has a meaning that would have been unimaginable before the personal computer. The word “cloud” also has a new, more recent meaning that accurately represents its nebulousness--just like most people don’t fully understand the clouds in the sky, neither do most people fully understand “the cloud.”
