The lateral group, as a whole, is largely responsible for independent limb movements. The corticospinal tract controls arm, hand, and finger movements, and damage to this tract would result in impairment of these limbs. The corticobulbar tract controls the face, neck, tongue, and parts of the eye muscles, posing difficulties in eating for those with damage to this area. The last tract is the rubrospinal tract, which controls forearms and hands but not the fingers. Therefore, a person with damage to this tract could still move the fingers but would have difficulty moving the hands as a whole.
