Explain how ice affects the healing process.

What will be an ideal response?

Initially ice minimizes pain which minimizes guarding.
Ice also helps to minimize the amount of swelling by causing vasoconstriction.
Ice helps to minimize secondary tissue death/damage by reducing the metabolic needs of tissue. Since the normal circulation is disrupted by injury even noninjured tissue is affected by the injury.
