Two major memory systems are explicit (declarative) and implicit (nondeclarative)
memory. Explicit memories require some conscious recall. Semantic memories are
explicit memories that represent broad knowledge of concepts, rules, and general
events. For example, describing the causes and consequences of the American Civil War
would tap semantic recall. Episodic memories represent another declarative memory;
these are memories for more specific events, such as knowing the location of your car
keys. Implicit memories represent memories that do not require much conscious
thought, for example, knowing how to drive a car requires little conscious recall.
