Conduct an analysis of the book publishing industry for Booker Publishing using the Porter's Five Forces framework. Evaluate each of the forces and determine whether each force is strong or weak
What will be an ideal response?
Threat of New Entrants:
Due to the fact that Booker Publishing is an already established, medium-sized publisher, the threat of new entrants is fairly low. However, with the increased popularity of self-publishing this threat may not remain low for too much longer. April should be sure to keep an eye on the market and be ready to develop a strategic response if this changes.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers:
Suppliers to publishing companies, generally speaking, have very little power so their bargaining power is weak. Booker Publishing has several different printing companies to choose from as well as paper supply companies, etc.
Bargaining Power of Buyers:
Individual consumers of Young Adult Fiction books do have some bargaining power mostly because of the vast availability of free online content that can substitute the need for books. These substitutions along with the increased popularity of eBooks have driven down the prices of traditional books and therefore the profits.
Threat of Substitute Products or Services:
With the increased availability of eBooks, the threat of substitutes has increased dramatically over the past 10 years. This force is by far the strongest in the Porter's Five Forces framework for Booker Publishing.
Rivalry Among Existing Competitors:
Generally speaking, competition in the book publishing industry can be fierce due to the fact that there are a few very large publishers, many small and medium sized publishers, and self-publishing is on the rise. Since Booker Publishing focuses only on Young Adult Fiction they do face less fierce competition then a publishing company that lacks a focused market.
