Briefly explain any two characteristics of informative speaking.
What will be an ideal response?
Effective informative speeches are intellectually stimulating, relevant, creative, memorable, and address diverse learning styles.
Intellectually stimulating information refers to the information that is new to audience members and piques interest. Here, new means the information that most of the audience is unfamiliar with or fresh insights into a topic with which they are already familiar. If an audience is unfamiliar with a topic, a speaker must consider how he or she might tap their natural curiosity. If an audience is familiar with a speaker’s topic, the speaker will need to identify new insight about it. Depth involves going into more detail than people’s general knowledge of a topic. Breadth involves looking at how a topic relates to associated topics.
A speaker should not assume his or her listeners will recognize how the information is relevant to them. The speaker must remember to incorporate listener relevance links through the speech.
Because audience members differ in how they prefer to learn, a speaker is most successful when he or she addresses diverse learning styles. One can appeal to people who prefer to learn through the feeling dimension by providing concrete, vivid images, examples, stories, and testimonials. Address the watching dimension by using visual aids. Address the thinking dimension by including definitions, explanations, and statistics. Address the doing dimension by encouraging the listeners to do something during the speech or afterward.
