The high cost and special expertise needed to install fiber discouraged most organizations
from replacing copper wiring. As work on Fast Ethernet progressed, FDDI proponents created a
version of FDDI called CDDI that ran over copper wiring. Ultimately, Ethernet proved to have lower
cost, and FDDI technologies vanished.
