Summarize the criticisms of Kohlberg's theory of moral reasoning put forth by Carol Gilligan. Does the research support or contradict these criticisms?
What will be an ideal response?
Gilligan says that there are emotional aspects to moral reasoning that go beyond the justice aspects that make up Kohlberg's theory. She maintains that females are more likely to incorporate emotion, caring and empathy into their moral decisions, while males are more likely to rely on the concept of justice. Research shows that these differences are not consistent in children and teenagers, but that sex differences may show up in adults in North American culture.
