Explain the circumstances surrounding the fall of the Roman Empire and its primary causes

Why and how the mighty Roman Empire came to collapse in the fifth century is unknown. A great many theories have been advanced, ranging from soil exhaustion and lead poisoning to the malaria epidemic of the third century, and the absence of a system for legitimate succession to the throne. In reality, it is likely that no one problem was responsible. Rome's slow decline was probably the result of a combination of internal circumstances: the difficulties of governing so huge an empire, the decline of the slave trade, and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor—during the Pax Romana, one-third to one-half of Rome's urban population received some form of public welfare. The Empire's internal problems were made all the worse by repeated barbarian attacks on Rome's borders. In 476, a Germanic army commander led a successful attack on Rome and deposed the reigning Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, finally bringing to an end the era of the Roman Empire.
