Girls achieve higher grades and have higher educational aspirations. Girls are less likely to have learning disabilities, less likely to be held back a grade, and less likely to drop out. These differences are especially strong among African American adolescents. Possible Reasons: Girls enjoy the school environment more, report more positive experiences in the classroom and have more favorable relationships with teachers. o Girls are more likely to feel supported by their parents, both academically and in other realms, as well as have more supportive relationships with adults outside the family. o Boys do less homework, watch more television, and read fewer books independently.
