The 98-foot column of Trajan has over 2,500 figures in 155 scenes stretching across a 625-foot frieze. The emperor Trajan appears in dozens of scenes. This work functioned as a piece of public-relations work for the Roman Army. They do little actual fighting, but a great amount of building. For example, Row 1 is probably a view of Viminacium, a village on the Danube in today's Serbia. The principle subject of the column is Trajan's campaigns against the Dacians, which took place between 101-107 CE. Boats carry provisions for the soldiers. The river god of the Danube looks on but offers no opposition to Trajan's campaign. Next the Roman soldiers leave the city gates, crossing the river on a pontoon bridge. This column has been a tourist attraction for centuries. A Roman city law of 1162 forbade damaging the column on penalty of death.
