The ideal answer would include the following:
1. If we are not aware of the limitations of demographic information, we can fall into harmful stereotyping. Stereotypes, or common assumptions about people of a particular group, often prove misguided. This not only undermines our ability to adapt to our audience, but can prove hurtful or harmful in our interactions with others.
2. Many of the demographics discussed, such as race, are socially constructed, meaning that they are shaped and created by culture. If you keep in mind the limits of adapting your speech based on demographics, you can appreciate how different audiences will respond based on their cultural context.
3. The author should provide examples of how demographic information can be limiting. For example, they might point out that for a long time, sexual assault was labeled a "woman's issue." However, a good speaker should be able to speak to both men and women about the importance of participating in an event like "Take Back the Night."
