Discuss the major risk factors that are related to health, and distinguish between modifiable and non-modifiable factors

Risk factors are behaviors, environmental conditions, or traits that increase the likelihood of a particular disease or injury. The presence of a risk factor increases the likelihood that a particular disease or outcome will occur. Risk factors are specific forms of factors from the broad categories of determinants of health discussed earlier. Specific risk factors include smoking (behavior), air pollution (environment), gender (biology), medication compliance (health care behaviors), and socioeconomic status (social determinants). Another important categorization within risk factors is modifiable verses non-modifiable (factors that may increase risk for disease but are not modifiable).Gender, age, race, and family history are non-modifiable risk factors for a variety of diseases. Children of parents with heart disease are more likely to develop heart disease. Other non-modifiable coronary heart risk factors include age and gender.?
