Briefly outline a few key points about HIV infection.
What will be an ideal response?
Infection with the HIV and its most severe stage, AIDS, has been responsible for over 27 million deaths since its discovery in 1981. The source of infection in humans has been found to be similar to a virus that infected chimpanzees in West Africa. It most likely mutated into its human form after being transmitted to hunters who ate the meat of the chimpanzees. Part of the Sixth Millennium Development Goal is to halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and to achieve universal access to treatment to all those who need it by 2010.
