What will be an ideal response?
The vastness of the stained glass in Gothic cathedrals, beginning with Saint Denis, declares its importance. The relationship between light and spirituality should be examined. The increased elaboration seen in the radiant style demonstrates how heaven was viewed.
The use of light to express both Christ as the light of the world and to enable a ‘reading' of scriptural figures and stories is evident in the Rose window and lancets of Chartres Cathedral North Transept. These upper storey windows feature ensembles of individual figures in vibrant colors which are easier to read from the floor below. The subject here is the royal and sacred heritage of Mary and Jesus and thus by extension that of the church itself.
In the center of the circle of windows is the rose window which depicts Mary, seated enthroned as Queen with the baby Jesus on her lap. Encircling the rose window are the portrayals of angels and the Holy Spirit. Hebrew kings, including the king David are featured in tipping square frames one step out from the angels.
