Speech communities are co-cultures, defining membership in terms of speaking
patterns and styles that reinforce beliefs and values of the group. Cultural groups are
set apart based on their unique communication styles. Thus, various speech
(communication) codes, or a culture’s verbalizations of meaning and symbols, tend to
have built into them certain ways of understanding the world that guide the particular
talk patterns people use in conversation with one another.
