How is the APGAR scale applied?

The APGAR scale measures five items- appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration at both one minute and five minutes after birth. A score of 7-10 is considered to be a reflection of good to excellent condition. An infant scoring a 4-6 will need assistance to begin breathing. A score below 3 means mortal danger.
