Answer: Data from the Epidemiological Catchment Area study provided valuable data in assessing the relationship between marriage and mental health. Researchers found consistent relationships between marital status and mental health. For example, depression occurred in 1.5 percent of people still in their first marriage. The rate for those who were never married (1-year prevalence) was 2.4 percent. Among those who had been divorced, the rate was 4.1 in the past year. Finally, 5.8 percent of people who had been divorced more than once had experienced depression in the previous 12 months.
