Discuss the notion of the “Other” in regard to the conquest of the Aztec and Incan cultures.

What will be an ideal response?

Non-European cultures were thought to be primitive, meaning that they knew nothing of the Christian god and Western culture—something totally “other.” At the very least, they required “civilizing.” The “Other” is incapable of exploiting their own natural resources for themselves. The West considered those they colonized to be weak, uneducated, and morally bankrupt. In the case of Aztec and Incan cultures, this led the Spanish colonizers seizing the indigenous peoples’ land and wealth and eradicating their culture and religion while replacing it with that of the colonizers.
