Explain to the parent of a toddler the differences between egocentrism and selfishness
What will be an ideal response?
Egocentrism is the belief that everyone sees things as you do or the inability to see the world
from anyone else's perspective other than your own. It is not a choice of young children to be
egocentric but more of a marker of their cognitive development which is a product of their brain
development. Egocentric children are simply reflecting their cognitive development, not setting forth
a path towards being selfish adults. Selfishness is an attitude and egocentrism is a trait of
development.
