Define the factors that contributed to Western global dominion: industrialism, colonialism, nationalism, and imperialism
What will be an ideal response?
Industrialization provided the economic and military basis for the West's rise to dominion over the rest of the world. It facilitated economic growth, which led to increased resources for political expansion. Western technology—internal combustion engine, the telegraph, the telephone, the camera, and electricity—helped to give Europe clear advantages over other parts of the globe and facilitated Western imperialism in less industrially developed areas. This process of industrialization, however, required great amounts of natural resources, which were exploited from poorer countries, such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Driven by the need for raw materials and markets for their manufactured goods, and aided immeasurably by their advanced military technology, European imperialism transformed the territories of foreign peoples into outright colonial possessions.
European imperialists defended the economic exploitation of weaker countries with the view, inspired by social Darwinism, that in politics, as in nature, the strongest or "most fit" prevailed in the "struggle for survival." This reasoning was fed by increasing feelings of nationalism (as well as the belief that white people were inherently superior). In America, the phrase "manifest destiny" was used to describe and justify a policy of unlimited expansion into the American West, Mexico, and elsewhere, displacing the Native populations.
