Explain the difference between listening and hearing.

What will be an ideal response?

- Listening is an active process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to verbal and nonverbal messages. In contrast, hearing is a passive physiological process of the ear processing sound.
- Communication scholars agree that the major difference between listening and hearing is that listening is an active cognitive process, while hearing is passive physical process. Either you receive the sounds or you don't. If you have normal hearing, your ears receive sounds. You don't have to work at hearing; it just happens. People can have excellent hearing and be terrible listeners. Listening, on the other hand, is cognitive; is active; and requires energy, desire, focus, and attention.
