Describe catatonia, and explain why psychologists believe that persons with this condition are desperately trying to control inner turmoil

What will be an ideal response?

Answer will include that catatonia is considered a disorder in its own right as well as being a symptom shown in other psychotic conditions. Catatonia is characterized by stupor; rigidity; unresponsiveness; posturing; mutism; and, sometimes, agitated, purposeless behavior. Schizophrenics sometimes display catatonia, remaining mute (not speaking) while holding odd postures for hours or even days at a time. These periods of stupor may be similar to the tendency to "freeze" at times of great emergency or panic. Catatonic individuals appear to be struggling desperately to control their inner turmoil . One sign of this is the fact that stupor may occasionally give way to agitated outbursts or violent behavior. Because of their unresponsiveness, catatonic patients are difficult to treat.
