Using Ernest Renan’s concept of a nation, explain why the following sentence is false: “The United States is not a nation.”

What will be an ideal response?

The above statement is false because a nation is defined as a group of people who share a common history and who agree to live together. The people of the United States clearly have a history that ranges from the War of Independence to the present. The people of the United States also have agreed to live together and make the best of their cultural heritage based on the idea of “equality for all” and concepts of “freedom.”
