A calling orientation reflects some employees' belief that they are doing work they were meant to do (i.e., that they are well-suited to), and that their work serves an important cause. The text describes a study of zookeepers with a sense of calling who were willing to exert significant personal sacrifice for their work. A calling orientation thus enhances personal motivation, even in the absence of extrinsic incentives. Research by Adam Grant showed that when people are focused on serving others (i.e., have prosocial motivation), they tend to put forth more effort, and also to be much more effective in their efforts.
