A throwaway is a youth who does not leave home willingly, but is forced to leave because of the behavior of
parents or guardians. Reasons adolescents become throwaways include: they are told to leave home; their parents
make home life so difficult that they feel they have no other choice except leaving; parents are physically or
sexually abusive; parental rejection because of substance abuse or behavioral problems; little or no parental
support; parental drug abuse; psychological abuse or no emotional encouragement from parents.
