Name one difference and one similarity between isotonic and isometric contractions

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Differences -- An isometric contraction does no external work because the muscle's force does not yet exceed the external resistance, and so the muscle exerts force but does not change length; an isotonic contraction may do external work since the muscle force exceeds external resistance, allowing the muscle to change length. For this reason, an isometric contraction usually occurs before an isotonic contraction. Similarities -- In both cases the muscle exerts force and may become fatigued and, in the case of overuse, possibly injured.
