By appealing to the puritanical factions of the city, emphasizing the moral decadence of humanism as exhibited by the Medici's and others of the nobility, and the fear of God, Savonarola convinced the general population to participate in destroying objects linked to humanism. He introduced the "bonfire of the vanities."
