It is important to consider the audience when choosing a speech topic. Your speech will not be a success if you do
not consider the audience's age, sex, and ethnic/cultural/religious background. Considering the demographics will
help you tailor your topic to your speci?c audience. Also, consider the audience's knowledge, attitudes, needs,
societal roles, occupation, and economic status when adapting a speech topic. For example, a nutritionist will give
an entirely different speech to grade schoolers about proper nutrition than she would to people of retirement age.
She would change her speech to meet the audience's needs again if she were addressing other nutritionists.
