Summarize the role NGOs played in the downfall of apartheid in South Africa.

What will be an ideal response?

In the mid-1980s, NGOs outside of South Africa and national governments funneled large sums of money directly into the hands of anti-apartheid groups within South Africa to support their activities. Moreover, these external NGOs put pressures on their own governments to distance themselves from South Africa, which was increasingly depicted as a racist regime. Soon foreign corporations, pressured by their stockholders, broke their economic ties with South Africa. Due to these external and internal pressures in which NGOs played a prominent role, the South African government abandoned apartheid.
