Several key demographic trends are discernable in the twenty-first century United States. First, the population continues to grow-between 1960 and 2000, it increased by more than 50 percent. Second, it is more mobile, with large movement into the South and the Southwest. The population is also aging, particularly in the Midwest and Plains. Ethnically, the United States is also changing rapidly-with minority groups such as Hispanics increasing in size. These changes are significant because they will affect voting patterns and political leadership patterns as the century continues.
