Compare the Atkinson and Shiffrin model of short-term memory with Baddeley's more complex model of short-term memory

What will be an ideal response?

In the older model, short-term memory was a unitary memory store that could hold information for about 20 seconds. Interference and decay were the mechanisms by which information could be lost from short-term memory.

Baddeley characterizes short-term memory as "working memory," consisting of four components: (1) the rehearsal loop, analogous to the whole of short-term memory in the Atkinson and Shiffrin model; (2) a visuospatial sketchpad that allows one to hold and manipulate visual images; (3) an executive control system, which holds the limited amount of information one can use in reasoning or decision-making at any given time; and (4) an episodic buffer that allows the various components of working memory to integrate information. Although the capacity and duration of information storage are unchanged in this newer model, the functions of short-term memory are greatly expanded.
