Despite the fact that the "schizophrenogenic mother" is no longer accepted as a familial influence for the development of schizophrenia, the concept of "expressed emotion" has been found to be related to the disorder

Define the concept and discuss the research supporting its relationship to schizophrenia and its limitations as a potential causal factor.

What will be an ideal response?

Expressed Emotion (EE) describes a family's emotional involvement and critical attitudes that are found among people with a psychological disorder. Patients with schizophrenia who live in family environments that are high on EE variables are more likely to relapse and have higher rates of rehospitalization. High EE is an environmental stressor that may increase the likelihood of relapse among those with schizophrenia. Since the relationship between high EE and relapse is based mainly on correlational data, no conclusions may be drawn as to causality.
